In 1994, Sotheby’s held an auction at the historic Brynbella estate in Tremeirchion, St. Asaph Clwyd, featuring the magnificent collection of Reginald Field Glazebrook and Daisy Isabel Glazebrook. The auction, conducted by direction of the executors of the late Glazebrooks, was a landmark event in the history of British art sales.

Reginald and Daisy Glazebrook were known for their impeccable taste and discerning eye for art. Their collection spanned a wide range of genres, from Old Masters to 20th-century contemporary art, and included furniture, porcelain, and silverware. The couple’s extensive travels and passion for collecting resulted in an array of rare and unique pieces that were highly coveted by collectors around the world.

One of the highlights of the auction was a stunning portrait by Joshua Reynolds, a leading figure in the 18th-century British art world. The painting, titled “Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Hamilton“, had been in the Glazebrook family for generations and was considered one of the finest examples of Reynolds’ work. The portrait sold for an impressive £1.5 million, making it one of the top lots of the auction.

Another standout piece was a pair of George III mahogany armchairs, attributed to the renowned cabinetmaker, Thomas Chippendale. The chairs, featuring intricate carved details and elegant curves, were a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the period. They sold for a staggering £670,000.

The Glazebrook collection also included works by contemporary artists such as David Hockney, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon, reflecting the couple’s keen interest in the art of their own time. A painting by Bacon, titled “Figure in a Landscape“, sold for £1.1 million, setting a new record for the artist at auction.

The auction at Brynbella was a fitting tribute to the Glazebrooks’ remarkable legacy as collectors and connoisseurs. It attracted a global audience of art enthusiasts and collectors, and the results demonstrated the enduring appeal of the finest examples of art and craftsmanship from across the centuries. Today, many of the pieces from the Glazebrook collection remain in private collections or museum collections around the world, a testament to their enduring value and significance.
