GEORGIANA,
DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE
Georgiana Cavendish, descendant of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough,
and daughter of Earl Spencer,
was the original of the famous Gainsborough portrait.
Married in 1774 to the Duke of Devonshire,
she was remarkable for her talent and beauty,
and became leader of fashion,
star of the aristocratic world,
and an influence in politics.
In 1784 she canvassed successfully for Mr. Fox
and was the heroine of the famous story of
the butcher’s vote won by a kiss.
She had a cultivated taste for poetry and the fine arts;
she encouraged genius,
and practised charity,
and was a careful and loving mother
to her two daughters and her son,
afterwards the sixth Duke.
