ISABELLA DE BOURBON

Isabella, daughter of King Henry IV of France,
was still a young girl when she was married
to Philip, Prince of Asturias
and heir to the Spanish throne.

On her husband’s accession,
she found herself queen of the most powerful
courts of Europe.

High-spirited and gay of heart,
she was yet wise in council,
and towards the end of her life
did her best to reform the scandalous immorality
prevalent in the Spanish court.

Her son, Don Baltasar Carlos,
was born in 1629,
and his death at an early age caused great sorrow
to his father.
The great Spanish painter Velasquez
has immortalized Isabella de Bourbon
in one of his superb canvasses.
