The company began life in 1875 when Alfred Meakin,the eldest son of a local potter,started his own business.In the early days,Meakin focused on producing inexpensive earthenware,which was used for everyday items like plates, bowls, and jugs.After Alfred's death in 1882,his sons, Henry and Frederick,took over the business andmoved it to a larger factory in Tunstall, Staffordshire. In the late 1880s,Alfred Meakin England produced some of its most iconic pieces.The company released the 'Old Granite' range of dinnerwareand the famous 'Brook-Lane' patterned teapots.Both of these items quickly became popular with customers,and they remain so to this day. In the 1950s,Alfred Meakin experienced a period of rapid growth and expansion.The company opened new factories in England,and its products were exported to countries around the world.Its products could be found in department stores such as Harrods,as well as in smaller shops. The company continued to produce new and popular patternsthroughout the 20th century,including the 'Blue Willow' and 'Victorian Rose' designs.Alfred Meakin England has remained popular with pottery collectors,and many of its pieces still hold considerable value on the antique market. It has been famous ever since. In turn priory, fortress and stately home, this memorable of coastal buildings occupies a superb defensive position high on its granite cone and surrounded by the sea. Only at low tide does a stone causeway give access to the mainland. In Armada Year a warning beacon flared from the Mount, and in the Civil War a century later it was a Royalist stronghold. The home of the same family for the past 300 years, the Mount has been presented to the National Trust while the family stays on as its tenant.
