CARD 44 IN A SERIES OF 50

PORTMEIRION (GWYNEDD)

At the end of Cardigan Bay

against the backdrop of Snowdonia

a rocky and heavily-wooded peninsula

just into the tidal estuary known as Traeth Bach

Here, between the two World Wars,

architect Clough Williams-Ellis created Portmeirion,

his Italian village in rural Wales. H

owever bizarre the concept,

Portmeirion nevertheless complements the scenery

with its domes and colonnades

and its blue-washed buildings and balustraded terrace.

There are good refreshment places,

and visitors are welcome.

If the weather is kind it is quite possible

to imagine oneself under Mediterranean skies
