CONTENTS:

1. INTRODUCING DOMINICA
“The mountains of Dominica rose from the sea in spikes,
and the clouds that overhung their summits
were loosened into a gap,
through which, over a pale disc of sea,
the moon split a silver cone.”
Patrick Leigh Fermor The Traveller’s Tree

Returning home after his second voyage,
Columbus described Dominica
by crumpling up a piece of paper and dropping it onto a table.
This was his one lasting impression and,
500 years later, the delightful rugged landscape
of this hilliest of Caribbean islands
will strike the surprised visitor in exactly the same way.

2. SETTING THE SCENE
Forming the eastern arc of the Lesser Antilles islands
are two groups, the Leeward to the north
and the Windward below them.
Dominica (pronounced Domineeka) lies right in the middle,
halfway between the French islands of Guadeloupe
to the north and Martinique to the south.

Fancifully resembling a legless turtle,
Dominica is 29 miles from north to south
and 16 miles from east to west,
covering a land area of almost 300 square miles,
making it twice the size of the Isle of Wight.
Easily the most mountainous and forested of all the islands
it has earned itself the title of ‘Nature Island’.
As such it offers the most spectacular and untamed scenery,
the most unusual natural phenomena
and is home to some of the worlds most exotic flora and fauna.
