TEXTS / NOTES / ANNOTATIONS:

FRONT COVER:
A nation alive with excitement and expectancy

ON CORONATION DAY
the country was alive with excitement and expectancy,
thrilled at the prospect of the historic occasion
that was about to take place.
Even the grey sky did nothing to quell the enthusiasm
of a nation engulfed in a sea of red, white and blue,
united to celebrate the crowning of its young Queen.
The air was filled with the joyful sounds of parties and carnivals,
and those with a television opened their homes
to neighbours and friends keen to see the proceedings.

In central London,
the festivities commenced the evening before
when thousands of people set up camp
along the procession route.
By nightfall the streets,
illuminated by the glow of flickering flames
from hundreds of cooking stoves,
were vibrant with singing, talking and laughter.

If the crowds had an uncomfortable night,
they were generously compensated for it
when the golden state coach emerged from Buckingham Palace.
Inside sat the Queen,
radiant in an ivory satin gown and glittering tiara.
To the roars and cheers of well-wishers,
the coach slowly made its way to Westminster Abbey.

BACK COVER:
God Save the Queen

INSIDE THE ABBEY,
the ancient, sacred ceremony took place.
In its essentials, Recognition, Oath, Anointing, Investiture, Homage,
the ceremony had remained unchanged for hundreds of years.

When the Archbishop of Canterbury finally raised
the heavily bejewelled St Edward’s Crown
high in the air and lowered it onto Her Majesty’s head
the Abbey erupted with cries of ‘God Save the Queen’
and then was filled with the melodic resonance of the Te Deum.
Having replaced the St Edward’s Crown
with the lighter Imperial State Crown,
the Queen left to the chorus of the national anthem.

During the day hundreds of thousands of people
flocked into London where the celebrations
continued well into the night.
There were fireworks over the Thames,
restaurants offered special champagne dinners
and good-natured revellers crammed into packed public houses.
