CONTENTS:

1. INTRODUCING MANAUS
Manaus is the state capital of Amazonas,
the largest yet least populated state in Brazil
The city sprawls across a number of low,
gently undulating hills
and is divided by many creeks or igarapes’
into the Río Negro – the huge river
which forms the waterfront for Manaus.

2. SOME FACTS ABOUT MANAUS

3. SETTING THE SCENE
Turning northwest from the River Amazon
into the River Negro at the ‘Encontro das Aguas’
or ‘The Meeting of the Waters’,
you will come upon Manaus
perhaps ten miles along the river on its northern side.

The approach is a surprising one.
The ship will pass a naval base
with numbers of warships alongside.
Then a large oil refinery will come into view;
it has direct connections to several ship
and boat fuelling stations moored offshore.
A floating ice-making factory
caps a spring in the river bed.
There are communications complexes, factories,
boat repair yards and old fishing harbours
surrounded by the homes, the palafitas’, of the fishermen
built upon high stilts to guard against the problems of flooding.

The final mile or so brings the ship to the city.
Guarded by a high flood prevention wall,
Manaus features many commercial buildings,
often high rise, its small cathedral,
the extraordinary opera house
with its beautifully tiled cupola and finally,
the ingenious floating port where the ship berths.

Ahead at the western end of the downtown area
is what seems to be a magnificent parish church
but instead is the local brewery!

The waterfront of Manaus
and the floating dock will be busy
with all manner of rivercraft, the ‘catamaras’,
and all manner of people.
At sunrise, it is probable that Amazon River Dolphins
will be feeding by the floating port,
often taking little or no notice of the hectic activity around them.

The southwest shoreline is bordered for fifty miles
by a vast floating marsh,
the home of the River People ‘ribeirinhos
their homes builts on rafts.
The marsh is also the haunt of South American alligators,
river dolphins, Amazon River manatees, Anacondas,
a profusion of waterbirds and birds of prey.
You will also see the Victoria Regia water-lilies,
their pads some times six feet in diameter,
the largest species of water lily in the world
and an Amazon speciality.
