Vintage George Stephenson (1781 to 1848) The Father of Railways POSTCARD Measurements: Approx. 5 7/8 x 4 1/8 inches Maker: Printed by E.T.W. Dennis & Sons Ltd., Scarborough. All British Prodcution. Paper: Postcard Text: George Stephenson (1781-1848) Commissioned by Wylam Parish Council to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Stephenson's birth this card depicts various aspects of his life and work. High Street House, the cottage at Wylam, Northumberland, in which he was born on 9 June, 1781 and that at Killingworth where he and his son Robert lived from 1804 to 1823. The two locomotives illustrated are a Hetton Colliery engine of 1822 and Locomotion No. 1 which Stephenson drove at the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. The Sankey viaduct on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway is an impressive monument to his genius. Tapton House, Chesterfield, was Stephenson's home for several years prior to his death in 1848.
