A Tour of the Fitzwilliam

The Fitzwilliam Museum:

The Fitzwilliam is not only the treasure-house

of the University of Cambridge,

it is also one of the oldest public museums in GREAT BRITAIN.

It was founded in 1816 by the bequest of Richard,

7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion.

But George Basevi’s design was only selected in 1834

after public competition

and the first stone laid on 2 November 1837.

The Museum was opened to the public in 1848.
