PICTURESQUE CORNWALL

We are taking an early holiday this year.
Could you tell us of a nice quiet little seaside place?
We rather thought of Cornwall.
“NATURE LOVERS”

CORNWALL, at all times of the year, is lovely,
and as you are taking your holidays early,
there is no more lovely choice.
Even in the height of the holiday season,
you can find farmhouses that offer excellent
and reasonable accommodation.

There are miles of lovely cliffs,
little sandy bathing coves, deep gullied rivers.

Then, if you want the picturesque
rather than naure at its wildest,
you find tiny little fishing villages
with white-washed, fuchsia-covered cottages,
cobbled streets, and all the busy,
intimate hum of harbour life.

There are such charming villages as Mullion,
MevagisseyFoweySt. Mawes and Looe
on the south coast,
and Port IsaacPort GaverneSt. Merryn
and Boscastle on the north coast.

HOLIDAY CAMP IN ISLE OF WIGHT

We have heard so much of holiday camps.
Could you tell me a little about them,
and where I can get the addresses?
We would prefer the South Coast,
or if there is one, the Isle of Wight.
A.B.

HOLIDAY camps are ideal for folk
wanting a really reasonable holiday
and a jolly companionable time.

They are chiefly patronised by young folk,
though often family parties,
older people and children all go to them.

Accommodation is usually in little wooden huts
fitted with camp beds, washing stands, etc.
and cupboards.
In these huts two or more can sleep,
depending on your choice.

Then there is a large dining hut
for the whole camp,
and a recreation hut with games,
such as ping-pong for wet days,
and dances and concerts arranged in the evenings.
The camps usually own a private strip of beach for bathing,
and tennis courts in the grounds.
The inclusive charges are round about 42s, a week.
There is an exceedingly nice camp in the Isle of Wight
with its own long strip of sandy beach.
You could not do better than choose this,
though as the camp is so popular,
it is essential to book early.

A GUEST HOUSE ON THE YORKSHIRE COAST

I have to spend my holidays on my own this year.
I hate to confess it,
but I am rather shy and would feel lost
at an ordinary hotel or boarding-house
where one sometimes feels so lost and strange.
Could you make any suggestions?
Miss N. (Leeds)

A GUEST HOUSE is what you want.
At such a place the visitors all make
a jolly friendly party,
and there is a host and hostess in charge
so that you will not be neglected
or left out of things for one moment.

At a place like Whitby,
where there are some lovely organised excursions
to the moors and beauty spots near at hand,
I think you would be happy.

Whitby itself is a lovely seaside place.
The east side is the old harbour and town,
with red-tiled old houses, cobbled streets,
and one of the most picturesque ports in England.

Then across the harbour is West Cliff,
with a fine sandy beach
and all the usual seaside attractions.

There are lovely walks along the cliffs
to the quaint little seaside places
such as Runswick and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Then, when you are tired of seaside scenery,
there is boating on the River Esk
with the possibility of lovely riverside picnics
along its wooded banks
with glimpses of the purple moorland
and exhilarating walks across these moors.

There are Guest Houses at various popular seaside resorts,
and also in Wales amidst most lovely mountain scenery.
Most of them have tennis and facilities
nearby for bathing.
Excursions are arranged for the guests,
either on foot for the strenuous,
or by motor coach
visiting the famous beauty spots in the vicinity!

A SERIES OF PROSE POEMS

“SUCH THINGS ARE DEAR”

A LITTLE deed that is well meant,
a little hour of sweet content,
a little thought of some kind friend,
a little helping hand to lend,
a little prayer at eventide-
such things make folk feel satisfied.

A little word of kindly praise,
a little help on busy days,
a little chat when things look grey,
a littl ehour in which to play,
a little word of homely cheer-
to tired hearts such things are dear.

A little smile in someone’s eyes,
a little counsel sweet and wise,
a little fun,
a little jest,
a little time in which to rest,
a little kindness here and there-
makes life much easier to bear.

So don’t despise the little things;
they take away the hurtful stings,
and little things are better far
than things that so much bigger are,
and little things we all can spare-
and smiles are little things to share!
– JEAN MORTON
