BACK COVER:

STRATHAIRD
The 23,000-ton Straths were too large
to be armed cruisers so they spent the War years as transporters.
Strathaird, built in 1932 and seen here in pleasanter times,
evacuated 6,000 troops and civilians,
not to mention British gold from Brest in 1940.
(Oil by Derek Smoothey, 1986)

Ships of the P&O 1837-1932
In this series of specially illustrated menu covers
we feature some of the ships
that have played an important part in P&O’s history.
From its foundation in the early 19th century
through to the 1930’s –
from the early paddle steamers
to the coal-burning ships and the steam turbine passenger liners
of a hundred years later.
