QUEEN GUINEVERE

The deeds of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table

have been related by many writers.

Of these the chief are Malory

(whose Morte d’Arthur was printed by Caxton in 1485),

and Lord Tennyson,

whose Idylls of the King

clothed in a new dress the tales and traditions

of the legendary British hero-king.

At Arthur’s court, his Queen, Guinevere,

outshone all others in beauty;

but she failed sadly where she should have excelled-

in the practice of her lord’s precepts.

For she loved Sir Lancelot,

and her unfaithfulness ultimately

led

to the break-up of the court and the death of the king.

Deeply repenting of her sin,

Guinevere entered a nunnery,

where she spent her life quietly doing good

until she passed

” to where beyond these voices there is peace”.
