CATHERINE THE GREAT

The daughter of Christian Augustus,

Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst,

Catherine was born at Stettin in 1729.

Fifteen years later the young Princess

set out to fulfill her diplomatically-arranged marriage

with the Grand Duke Peter,

heir to the Russian throne-

a marriage which proved miserably unhappy,

for her husband was ignorant,

cold-hearted and repulsive.

He treated her with savage contempt

and on his accession, tried to divorce her.

But the army, the clergy and the nation as a whole

were devoted to Catherine,

and Peter lost his life as the result

of a revolt in 1762.

As sole ruler,

Catherine governed with wisdom and power.

She was a magnificent horsewoman,

and loved to command her army

in field marshall’s uniform.

Her soldiers adored her,

and her people trusted her implicitly-

a trust which she did not betray.
