BACKGROUND

Built between 1509-10 at Portsmouth,
the Mary Rose was named after Mary Tudor,
the younger sister of King Henry VIII.

After she was re-built in 1536
she carried 91 guns and weighed 700 tons.

She sank mysteriously on 19th July, 1545
on her way to fight the French Fleet at Bembridge,
with the loss of some 700 lives.

She was raised in 1982
and now rests on public view at Portsmouth dockyard.
