WHO IS DAME VERA LYNN?

Dame Vera Lynn was a British singer and songwriter,

who became known as the “Forces’ Sweetheart”

during World War II.

She was born in East Ham, London, in 1917,

and began her singing career as a teenager.

In 1935, she had her first hit record with “The Lambeth Walk”,

and went on to become one of the most popular singers of the era.

During the war, Dame Vera became

an icon of hope for British troops and civilians alike,

with songs like “We’ll Meet Again”

and “The White Cliffs of Dover”.

She travelled to Burma to entertain the troops,

and her music was broadcast on the BBC’s Forces Programme.

After the war,

she continued to perform and record,

and in 1952 she became the first British artist

to have a number one hit in the US

with “Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart”.

Dame Vera was also involved in charity work throughout her life,

particularly supporting ex-servicemen and women,

and she was made a Dame Commander

of the Order of the British Empire in 1975

for her services to entertainment and charity.

She passed away on June 18, 2020,

at the age of 103,

leaving behind a legacy

as one of Britain’s most beloved and enduring icons.
