LADY HAMILTON

Few people experience such extremes of fortune

as fell to the lot of Lady Hamilton.

Born the daughter of Henry Lyon,

a country blacksmith,

she is said to have served both as a

nursery-drudge and domestic servant

before her friendship with the Hon. Charles Greville

brought her into touch with cultured society.

Later she married Greville’s uncle,

Sir William Hamilton,

ambassador at Naples where,

as Lady Hamilton,

she became famous for her great beauty,

wit and artistic accomplishments.

Lord Nelson fell victim to her charms,

and much has been written of their famous love affair.

During her lifetime many artists

painted her portrait;

George Romney,

who executed over twenty paintings of Lady Hamilton,

confessed that she was

the chief inspiration of his art.
