WHO ARE THE Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU)?

The Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU)
was a British trade union
that was active from 1920 to 1992.
It was one of the largest and
most influential trade unions in the country,
representing workers in a wide range of engineering industries,
including shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and heavy engineering.

Over the years,
the AEU played a key role in improving working conditions
and wages for engineering workers,
as well as advocating for political and social reforms
that benefited the working class.
In the 1970s, the AEU was involved
in a number of high-profile strikes and industrial actions,
including the Grunwick dispute
and the Lucas Aerospace workers’ plan.

After a century of intermittent discussions,
the AEU managed to achieve a merger
with the Electrical, Electronic,
Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EETPU) in 1992,
resulting in the formation of a new trade union
called the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU).
The union was thus able to combine the expertise
and resources of both organisations
and expand its scope to encompass workers
from both the engineering and electrical industries.
