WHO IS ADMIRAL USHAKOV (1745 – 1817)?
 
Admiral Ushakov (Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov)
was a Russian naval commander
who lived from 1745 to 1817.
He is widely regarded as
one of the greatest naval commanders in Russian history,
known for his strategic prowess
and exceptional leadership skills.
 
Ushakov was born into a noble family
in the Russian city of Yaroslavl,
and he began his naval career at the age of 11
as a cadet in the Russian Navy.
Over the course of his career,
he participated in numerous naval battles and campaigns,
including the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792
and the Napoleonic Wars.
   
Throughout his military career,
Ushakov was known for his innovative tactics,
his ability to inspire his troops,
and his unwavering commitment to duty.
He was also a deeply religious man,
and he was known for his strict adherence
to Orthodox Christian principles.
   
Ushakov’s most notable military achievements
include his successful defense of the Greek island of Corfu
during the Russo-Turkish War,
and his decisive victory over the Turkish fleet
at the Battle of Chesme in 1770.
He was also instrumental in the establishment
of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,
and he played a key role
in the annexation of the Crimea by Russia in 1783.
   
Today, Admiral Ushakov is remembered
as a national hero in Russia,
and he is honoured with numerous statues,
