WHO IS MIKHAIL KUTUZOV?

Mikhail Kutuzov (1745-1813)
was a Russian military commander
who played a prominent role in the Napoleonic Wars.
He is considered one of Russia’s greatest military leaders
and is known for his successful defense of Russia
against Napoleon’s invasion in 1812.

Kutuzov had a long and distinguished military career,
serving in the Seven Years’ War,
the Russo-Turkish War,
and the Polish War of 1792.
He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian army in 1812,
just as Napoleon invaded Russia with his Grande Armée.

Kutuzov’s strategy was to avoid
direct confrontation with the French army
and instead engage in a campaign of attrition,
wearing down the enemy
through a series of tactical retreats
and scorched-earth tactics.
This strategy allowed the Russians
to preserve their forces
while the French army suffered from disease,
hunger, and exposure to the harsh Russian winter.

In the decisive Battle of Borodino in September 1812,
Kutuzov led the Russian army
to a bloody stalemate against Napoleon’s forces.
Though the battle was technically a French victory,
it was a strategic victory for Kutuzov
as he was able to inflict heavy losses on the enemy
while preserving the bulk of his own forces.

After Borodino,
Kutuzov continued to pursue his strategy of attrition,
harrying the French army as it retreated from Russia.
He was able to prevent Napoleon
from achieving a decisive victory,
and his tactics ultimately contributed
to Napoleon’s defeat in the Napoleonic Wars.
