FIRST HERO OF SAS DIES

Sir David Stirling,
the founder of the SAS,
has died after a long illness,
aged 74.

It was while he was serving
in the North African desert
with the Guards in 1942
that Sir David got his idea for a special force.

The young major urged the need
for “an army within an army”
to make secret raids against the enemy.

He was given six officers and 60 men
to try out his theories in the Western Desert.

The Special Air Services was born,
and Major David Stirling became known
as the “Phantom Major”
among Rommel’s troops
after destroying 250 enemy aircraft
and scores of fuel and ammunition dumps.

His tactics of operating far behind German lines
helped give him legendary status.

In 1943 he was taken prisoner in Tunisia.
He escaped, was recaptured
and spent the rest of the war in notorious Colditz Castle.

Sir David quit the army in 1945
as a colonel,
but kept close links with the regiment-
motto “Who Dares Wins”-
and is believed to have helped
with counter-terrorism.
